HVAC customer serviceEventually, a service technician will need to come to your home to perform maintenance or repairs on the heating and cooling system. And all of these systems at some point require replacement. So what should you look for when it comes to quality HVAC customer service?

Unfortunately, it’s much easier to recognize poor customer service than excellent service. A rude, poorly groomed technician who doesn’t seem like he cares one way or another and appears uncertain about the job you’re paying him to do – now that’s rotten customer service. But how do you differentiate ordinary HVAC customer service from quality service? Here are some things to look for.

Clues to Great Customer Service

  • A good HVAC contractor will insist on inspecting the HVAC system and home before providing an estimate for a significant repair or installation.
  • The technician(s) will show up on time and behave professionally and politely. Look for the North American Technician Excellence (NATE) badge on the tech’s shirt, which signifies comprehensive training and knowledge about general and specific HVAC issues.
  • The tech should ask questions about the history of the problem you’ve been having, look over energy bills from the past year, and question you about your energy-using habits.
  • Once the technician has examined the equipment, he should give you a clear diagnosis of the problem, and then lay out a plan for addressing the issue.
  • If you’re getting a furnace, heat pump or A/C replaced, the system engineer should discuss your options with regard to advanced features and energy efficiency. For example, he or she shouldn’t try to oversell a high-efficiency heating system for a Southwest Florida home. A quality system engineer should insist on performing a load calculation before recommending a certain heating or cooling system so you don’t get saddled with a system that’s too big or too small. Both of these situations can cost you in energy costs and home comfort.
